How efficient is the diesel generator?

Diesel generators are famous for their efficiency for a simple reason: because diesel generators use compression to ignite fuel, they do not need to use as much fuel to run as natural gas generators. Diesel generators introduce air and fuel separately and compress them into the engine, which allows them to use less fuel to output power.

Generally, diesel generators operate at an efficiency of about 40% within their design optimum operating range, usually up to 80% of the total load capacity. This means that for every 100 units of energy input, 40 units will be output. As with any mechanical system, heat and friction cause energy loss.

For diesel generators, the efficiency can be expressed as a specific fuel consumption per hour per litre. Manufacturers usually provide this information in their marketing materials. When deciding which generator to buy, you can consider the fuel consumption rate.

Is the natural gas generator efficient?

The peak energy density of diesel fuel is about three times that of natural gas. Therefore, even the most efficient natural gas generator cannot compare with diesel generator in terms of efficiency.

However, fuel efficiency is not the only factor you should consider when choosing a generator. Depending on your application and power needs, some of the benefits of natural gas generators may be ideal, including their tendency to be quieter and more environmentally friendly.
